5:00 pm
this morning and injured more than 1,000 people? it was captured by security cameras and cell phones as it streaked across the sky at about 33,000 miles an hour. kristin fisher spent the day sifting through all the footage it. looks like that movie armageddon. >> it did. for many people on the ground in that remote russian town they said they thought it was the end of the world, either that or a nuclear bomb going off. they had absolutely no warning that this huge space rock was heading right for them. a burst of bright light, then a sonic boom caused by a meteor as it hit the earth's atmosphere. it sent out shock waves that set off car alarms and shattered windows, more than 1,000 people including 200 children injured by the broken glass. watch what it looked like from inside an office building. a huge burst of air and broken glass. here's another view from inside a warehouse. just look at the force of the
5:01 pm
explosion as it knocks down the door. a canadian hockey player now living in russia described it like this. >> i hear this loud bang! i live in a 24-story building on the 23rd floor and all of a sudden i looked up and the lights are shaking and i hear car alarms going off. it was incredible. >> the meteor streaked across the sky at 33,000 miles per hour rocking a mountain range about 900 miles east of moscow. in total about 3,000 buildings were damaged. the worst was at this zinc factory where the roof completely collapsed. all of this damage was caused by a meteor about the size of an suv, too small for anyone to know it was coming. >> these things happen once every few decades of the centuries. as bad as that was, keep in mind that this happened over one of the more remote places on the entire planet. just imagine, derek, if this had happened over a very
5:02 pm
populated place like manhattan with all those skyscrapers just made entirely of glass. what would have happened there? all that glass would have exploded or imagine if it had happened here in d.c., scary stuff. >> i think folks would have said the mayans had it wrong by a couple of months. thanks. you can call it a cosmic coincidence, but also today an astroid was flying right past the earth and the closest call for a rock that size maybe ever. as erica grow discovered, the two flying objects came from two very different places. >> an astroid flies past earth on a close approach and on the same exact day a meteorite makes impact with earth in russia. what's really going on here? i came to nasa goddard to find out and get some real answers. >> today the day of an amazing cosmic coincidence. >> the close call happened earlier this afternoon. an astroid called 2012 da14 whizzed pasted earth at about
5:03 pm
17 thousands miles per hour. nasa scientists believe da14 was once part of the astroid belt between mars and jupiter and is a remnant of our ancient solar system. the astroid passed under the orbit of some of our weather satellites. it's captivated attention of people at goddard and around the world. we had about 17,000 miles of breathing room from its closest point above the indian ocean and it was about 2,000 miles or so from the nearest satellite orbiting earth. >> space is a really big place, so it's still mostly empty. >> reporter: the approach of da14 may be news to us, but nasa has known about it for a year. it's the meteor that slammed into russia earlier this morning that took them completely by surprise. it's a calculated risk nasa took when they first started studying outer space for possible close encounters. >> we started out focusing on the largest astroids that would cause global damage and have
5:04 pm
pretty much ruled out damage of that kind of magnitude in the foreseizure future. >> the meteor that hit russia today was under 500 feet in diameter. nasa's pro s rex mission is to learn more about these flying objects. i'm meteorologist erica grow, wusa9. >> nasa plans to catch up with an astroid as it passes near us in the year 2016, collect samples and hopefully figure out more where it came from. new information on a bizarre and disturbing kidnapping and rape case in philadelphia. wusa9 has learned the alleged kidnapper is a 19-year-old former women's track athlete from springfield high school right here in montgomery county. christine rigusters is charged with disguising herself in traditional muslim robes to snatch a 5-year-old girl from a philadelphia school. our scott broom is in white

among us. >> family members accepted the awards on behalf of the women among 18 people awarded the presidential citizens medal. the president told the audience it's citizenship that binds our nations together and captures americans' belief in something bigger than themself. president obama's chief of staff will be a guest on this week's face the nation and joining us now its host bob schieffer, always good to chat with you. >> how you doing, derek? we've got plenty to talk to denis mcdonough about, that's for sure. >> the president had left washington right after the state of the union and is out using the bully pulpit to try to move his agenda forward is. it your experience presidents can actually -- forward. is it your experience presidents can actually move the needle forward doing it this way? >> well, i suppose he's tried everything else. what he leaves behind is a washington just as gridlock, a partisan divide just as wide,
5:16 pm
maybe wider than before the election. so there's no question what his strategy is now, to get out into the country and try to build up as much rather than pressure, let's just say support for some of the things he's trying to get done because right now he's not getting much of a response from the other side here. so i don't know if it will work or not, but it has worked from time to time in the past because after all, congress reflects the mood of the people. right now, though, you've got a congress that is so divided these districts have been so gerrymandered that it's pretty hard to get everybody into one place at one time, but we'll see what happens. >> let's talk about the hagel nomination for the pentagon chief over there. we're seeing something we don't usually see and that is senators sort of putting the brakes on one of their own. how often have you seen that sort of thing happen and will chuck hagel eventually be confirmed to your mind? >> i don't know the answer.
5:17 pm
a lot of people are saying that in the end he will be confirmed on a very narrow vote, but i'm not ready to say that yet. there's a great deal of dissatisfaction not just with chuck hagel who did not make all that good an impression during his confirmation hearing, but beyond that there are republicans who are trying their best to find out what happened on that night in benghazi when those four americans died and they still are not satisfied with the answers they're getting. so i'm not sure. i wouldn't bet the ranch right now that he will ever be confirmed, but that should come to a head in about a week when congress comes back from yet another vacation. >> all right. bob schieffer, face the nation on sunday, thank you so much for your time this afternoon. >> okay. gas prices are on the way up again. oil companies say it's a supply issue.
5:18 pm
some refineries are shut down for maintenance while others are switching from the winter blend of gasoline to the more expensive summer blend. consumer watchdogs say refineries could ease the pain by having more gas in reserve. >> it's an artificial price spike in a market that's being artificially manipulated by a handful of refiners who know that if they make less gasoline, they make more money. >> analysts say gas prices could go up past $4 a gallon again but are not expected to reach the record levels from last fall. top, what's this here talking about snow again? >> well, the way this winter has gone we're getting it flake by flake, okay? we have rain showers right now which could hamper the evening commute and could change the snow showers later. let's start with live look outside. it is our michael and son weather cam. it's still pretty nice. clouds have rolled in. temperatures almost hit 60 in
5:19 pm
many spots, okay? so the dew point's 30. the air mass is dry, but because it's so warm, we're going to start out with rain showers. look at current temperatures. notice we're seeing 40s in germantown and ashburn, already 42 out toward leesburg, 58 in college park, 56 in fairfax, 57 in arlington. the temperatures will fall pretty quickly. this is kind of a cool map. 24 hour temperature change. look how much warmer it is along the eastern seaboard, 10 to 11 degrees warmer today than yesterday and look how much colder it is now behind the front, 11 to 13 degrees colder behind the frontal system. that's the same frontal system that's rolling in here tonight. this is rain along i-81 and points east. this is snow or a mixture back into much of west virginia and also western maryland. it's a great weekend to go skiing, by the way, whether you
5:20 pm
go to wisp or snowshoe. these are all rain showers. you see the oranges and yellows pop up from time to time. that's pretty heavy rainfall. you're going to see a brief heavy down power. the heaviest rainfall now -- downpour. the heaviest system is north of brunswick. it will roll essentially through frederick in the next 20 minute. don't be surprised if you get caught in brief heavy rainfall and a couple sleet pellets possible later this evening. showers in time for the commute unfortunately, flurries and snow showers overnight, no road problems, temps above 32 and snow shower or flurry possible saturday and sunday, but we cannot buy a snowstorm this year. there will be one developing off the coast, not going to do us any good. 7:00 tonight we still find some rain showers, watch this. we'll stop it at 9:00. seeing a mixture now north of frederick and by 10:30 everything is pretty much gone. we still run the risk of snow showers in the mountains and we
5:21 pm
get into saturday, could see a few more snow showers through the afternoon and evening. the next three days we'll keep everything a green alert and why not? 42 tomorrow, snow showers possible. colder sunday, a snow shower still possible, 36. best chance for accumulating snow this weekend could be the delmarva and 46 monday, seasonable with sunshine. next seven days, so a very nice presidents day and tuesday, still rain and showers, temperatures upper 40s, a little chillier on wednesday and then a little cool on thursday and then back to the low 50s with sunshine next friday. so as derek would say, another week has gone by. >> counting the flakes. still ahead a kangaroo court. >> a championship golf tournament is interrupted by some kangaroos. >> lots of them. >> up next pack your patience if you plan to take metro to visit some of the downtown
